Elizabeth - Accounting Intern
- Graduated From: University of Wisconsin - Green Bay
- Degree: Accounting
- Title: Accounting Intern
Were you assigned meaningful projects that helped you gain experience right out of school?
As an intern I had the opportunity to gain experience in many different areas and learn how accounting works in a real company. The projects and activities I was assigned showed me how different a career in accounting was from the debits and credits I learned in my college classes. My work is challenging and varied, and I'm looking forward to continuing my career at Integrys and expanding my knowledge even further. There will always be more for me to learn.
What is it like to work at Integrys?
Integrys has a great work environment, and I have already made many friends here. My co-workers and supervisors are very supportive and I have always been encouraged to ask questions and try new things. I am excited to take on more responsibility and begin my career at this company. The competent staff and opportunities for growth make Integrys first-class employer.
Name one reason you decided to work for Integrys.
I decided to apply for an internship with Integrys because they have an excellent reputation. The company offered me great experience, flexible hours, and competitive pay while I completed my college courses. I decided to apply for a full-time position after two years of being an intern because my internship experience was a great preview of what a career at Integrys would hold for me. A position at Integrys means advancement opportunities, challenging work, great benefits, competitive salary, and a friendly work environment. Integrys is an outstanding company to work for.
Do you have any advice for soon to be graduates and prospective employees?
Employers like to see that you can balance work, school, and other outside activities successfully. Joining student organizations and participating in their events, or volunteering to help with activities related to your major help you stand out from the crowd. My internship with Integrys gave me an edge over competing graduates because I had personal experience to draw on during my interview. It also taught me about my chosen career field, and made it easier for me to choose what I wanted to do after graduation. Before I interviewed for my position I sat down and made a list of all the skills I had learned during my internship, and how I had demonstrated my ability to handle responsibility. The inventory showed me that I had gained several marketable skills, and I felt very confident that I would be able to go into my interview and communicate the reasons why I was a good fit for the company. I would recommend that every prospective employee take the time to reflect on how their past experiences before they interview.
Did you learn any new marketable skills?
When I did an inventory of situations where I had demonstrated marketable job skills, I took many examples directly from my experiences at Integrys. During my time with the company I have had opportunities to work on analytical and problem solving skills, adaptability and flexibility in changing situations, precision and attention to detail, workload/time management, organizational skills, and communication skills (with both co-workers and internal customers). I am constantly finding new ways to exercise my existing skills and challenge myself to learn more.
