Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas Urge Customers to Apply for LIHEAP Grants

Program Open Now for Seniors, Those With Disabilities and Disconnected Customers

CHICAGO, IL - Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas have begun notifying customers that the application period has opened for grants from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The program provides grants to help customers struggling to pay their energy bills. The program opened on Sept. 2 for Seniors, people with disabilities and customers whose service has been disconnected.

Peoples and North Shore Gas, the two utility companies serving approximately one million customers in the City of Chicago and 54 communities on the North Shore, are urging customers to apply now if they need assistance. LIHEAP is administered in Cook County by the Community and Economic Development Association (CEDA). Grants are available to help customers pay outstanding bills, reconnect service, and maintain their home's natural gas service.

To inform customers, Peoples and North Shore are sending recorded phone calls to customers who are experiencing challenges paying their energy bills. The phone calls urge customers to contact CEDA to determine if they are eligible for the LIHEAP funding, and how to apply for the help. The company is also urging all customers to consider signing up for its Budget Payment Plan to help manage heating bills year-round. The program spreads annual payments more evenly over the year to help customers plan their utility payments. In addition, the company urges all customers to reduce energy usage as a key tool in helping to manage heating bills.

"Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas are committed to delivering safety, warmth and reliability to our customers year-round," said Rodrigo A. Sierra, vice president of Public Affairs. "To help fulfill that mission, we are working with community groups, area churches and elected officials to provide customers with information on how to use energy more efficiently, budget payment programs to help stabilize bills, and grants for those who need assistance."

LIHEAP is now open for customers who are disconnected, seniors or families with seniors in the households and those with disabilities. Customers must have proof of income, a copy of their utility bill and social security numbers for everyone in the household. Customers may be eligible for a grant if their income is 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines according to the following chart:

Family Income Guidelines
Size of Family 30 Days of Income
1 $1,300
2 $1,750
3 $2,200

5 $3,100
6 $3,500
