Peoples Gas, Chicago Fire Department and First Alert Partner to Promote Safety From Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Chicago, IL – Peoples Gas today joined the Chicago Fire Department and First Alert to promote Carbon Monoxide (CO) safety, the number one cause of poisoning deaths in the United States.

Bonnie Johnson, manager, Public Relations, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas joined Chicago Fire Department Commissioner, John W. Brooks, and Deborah Hanson, director, External Affairs, First Alert in announcing a partnership to promote CO safety in the home as just one part of the utilities overall commitment to the safe and reliable delivery and use of natural gas.

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, "There are approximately 2,100 unintentional deaths from carbon monoxide (CO) every year in the U.S. and the use of CO Alarms could potentially prevent many of these fatalities. In addition, more than 10,000 CO injuries occur annually from this colorless, odorless and tasteless poison."

During the press conference, Johnson stressed the need for residents to ensure that heating equipment is in top operating condition. "Carbon monoxide can come from a host of appliances including water heaters, furnaces, ranges/stoves, clothes dryers, grills, fireplaces and portable generators,” said Johnson. “It is important that residents practice preventive maintenance and have their appliances checked or inspected on a regular basis."

To help promote the use of CO alarms in the home, Peoples Gas and the Chicago Fire Department will be giving away free CO alarms, courtesy of First Alert, to the first 100 people at each of four firehouses during the month of November. In addition, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas customers are eligible for a discount to purchase a First Alert CO alarm.
