Peoples Gas & North Shore Gas Urge Customers to Apply for LIHEAP Grants

Program Opens for ALL Eligible Customers on November 1st

CHICAGO, IL – On November 1, all eligible Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas customers can apply for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) funds if they are in need of assistance this heating season. The program provides grants to help customers struggling to pay their energy bills.

"We are strongly encouraging all of our customers who meet the specified requirements to apply now," said Rodrigo Sierra, vice president of Public Affairs for Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas. "Just as importantly, we are encouraging customers to take advantage of various other programs and services to help them use energy more efficiently, stabilize their bills and manage their accounts during an environment of higher energy costs nationally," Sierra said.

Peoples and North Shore Gas recommends that customers weatherize their homes, enroll in the Budget Payment Plan and seek financial assistance if they need it. Information about all of these initiatives can be found at www.peoplesgasdelivery.com and www.northshoregasdelivery.com

LIEHAP grants are available to help customers pay outstanding bills, reconnect service and maintain their home’s natural gas service. In the 2007-2008 heating season, approximately 92,000 customers took advantage of LIHEAP assistance. This year, because of significant increased federal funding, the program should be able to help far more residents stay warm this winter.

To apply for LIHEAP, customers must have proof of income, a copy of their utility bill and social security numbers for everyone in the household. Customers may be eligible for a grant if their income is 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines according to the following chart:

Family Income Guidelines
Size of Family 30 Days Income
1 $1,300
2 $1,750
3 $2,200
4 $2,650
5 $3,100
6 $3,550
7 $4,000
8 $4,450
