Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas Launch Fund Raising Drive to Help Keep Chicagoans Warm this Winter

Faces of Share the Warmth Campaign to Encourage Giving

Chicago, IL – Today, in a press conference with the City of Chicago, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas announced the launch of a new customer focused campaign, Faces of Share the Warmth. The two utilities are partnering with the Salvation Army, City of Chicago, and Quilt Connection to increase donations to the company’s Share the Warmth fund in order to provide more grants to customers who qualify.

This new four month long campaign is designed to encourage customers to donate to the Share the Warmth fund by showing them how their dollars are helping their neighbors. The Share the Warmth fund, is an energy assistance program administered by the Salvation Army and funded through donations from Peoples Gas, North Shore Gas, the company’s employees and customers, and the City of Chicago. The fund provides matching grants up to $200 for those who qualify. Since 2000, Share the Warmth has provided more than $7 million in heating assistance grants to more than 35,000 families.

"The fluctuating costs of natural gas will impact our customers this winter potentially causing some of them to experience challenges in paying their winter heating bills," said Will Evans, Jr., president of Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas. "Our commitment to customers extends beyond delivering safe and reliable natural gas and includes providing information and tools on energy conservation and programs that will help all of our customers manage their energy needs and costs."

In addition to Share the Warmth, the application process for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) funds is now open to all eligible customers to help them pay outstanding bills, reconnect service and maintain their home's natural gas service. This year, because of significant increased federal funding, the program should be able to help far more residents stay warm this winter. "This is vital since the tough economic times may result in more families needing help to pay their energy bills this year and next," said Evans.

Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas recommend that customers weatherize their homes, enroll in the Budget Payment Plan and seek financial assistance if they need it. Information about all of these initiatives can be found at www.peoplesgasdelivery.com and www.northshoregasdelivery.com.

"We are strongly encouraging all of our customers to take advantage of these programs and services to help them use energy more efficiently stabilize their bills and manage their accounts during an environment of higher energy costs nationally," said Evans.

The new "Faces of Share the Warmth" campaign will feature both customers who have given to the fund and customers who have been recipients of grants from the fund through TV, print and radio advertising, customer communications and the companies' websites.

To compliment the new program a Share the Warmth Quilt will be sewn to represent the donations made to the fund throughout the duration of the campaign. The Quilt Connection, a not-for-profit volunteer group, will weave a patchwork quilt to represent donations collected during the campaign through the generosity of our customers. As the fund grows, so will the quilt.

Share the Warmth funds will be made available to all eligible customers beginning on December 1. Customers who are at or below 200% of the poverty level may qualify. Customers can call the Salvation Army at 773-725-1100 to make appointments to apply for Share the Warmth grants. Grants match customer payments dollar-for-dollar up to $200.
