Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas Win Silver Trumpet Award for Comprehensive Community Outreach Campaign

Chicago, IL – Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, the two utility companies that deliver safe and reliable natural gas to approximately 1 million customers in Chicago and 54 communities in Lake County, were recognized at the Publicity Club of Chicago’s 50th Annual Trumpet Awards Luncheon held May 14 as a Silver Trumpet winner in the Community Relations category.

During the 2008 heating season, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas launched a comprehensive community-focused public affairs campaign to help customers manage and pay their energy bills due to fluctuating gas prices and a weak economy.

"We are extremely honored to receive this award," said Will Evans, president of the two utility companies. "Every day at Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, we strive to help our customers manage their energy costs and understand their options, especially during this time of a struggling economy. This community outreach campaign developed and executed by our Public Affairs team, is just one example of our commitment to customers."

The goal of the community outreach campaign was to inform customers of potentially high gas prices, increase awareness of programs and services provided by the utilities to help customers manage their energy costs, promote energy efficiency, provide and promote natural gas safety and provide information about resources and access to financial assistance.

"In order to make the campaign a success, we strategically built partnerships with key stakeholders to address the issue, increased our community presence, created messages and materials for customers to easily understand and leveraged energy efficiency programs and incentives to help customers," said Evans.

As a result, Peoples and North Shore Gas were able to increase the number of accounts on short term payment agreements, increase the number of customers receiving financial grants by nearly 30% and help more than 11,000 customers avoid disconnection by utilizing a new pilot program called the "minimum payment option (MPO)." The MPO encourages customers with financial struggles to pay a minimum amount and avoid disconnection of service while they work on their financial struggles.

The Publicity Club of Chicago's 2009 Golden Trumpet Awards are the most prestigious awards program in the Midwest honoring distinguished individual achievement of public relations and communications. All awards are presented for excellence in planning, creativity and execution.
