Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas Focus on Pipeline Safety as Part of National Pipeline Safety Day

Utilities Call on Contractors to Adhere to Safety Procedures During Busy Construction Season

Chicago, IL – Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, the Greater Chicago Damage Prevention Council, the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Chicago Fire Department and Gas Workers Union Local 18007 today called on contractors to adhere to Federal, State and City rules for digging during the construction season.

The effort is part of National Pipeline Safety Day. Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution introduced by U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen (WA-02) designating June 10th, 2009 as National Pipeline Safety Day.

"We are extremely pleased that the federal government has designated June 10th as National Pipeline Safety Day," said Rodrigo A. Sierra, vice president, Public Affairs, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas. "We welcome the opportunity to create greater public awareness of the vital role that our 6,000 miles of pipeline plays in delivering energy to our 1-million customers every day."

Sierra says that it is crucial for contractors who work on underground infrastructure to closely follow all guidelines for working safely around natural gas pipelines. In 2008, People Gas experienced 768 third party hits to its pipes.

"Each time a gas main is hit, emergency workers must respond," said Sierra. "Not only does the gas company respond, but so do the Chicago Fire Department, the Department of Environment and often CDOT and the City’s Office of Emergency Management – 911."

The utilities work closely with DIGGER and the Greater Chicago Damage Prevention Council in Chicago and JULIE in the North Shore Gas territory to help prevent damage to pipelines during construction.

Anyone planning work that involves digging in Chicago is required to call DIGGER at 312-744-7000 and JULIE at 800-892-0123 in North Shore Gas territory at 800-892-0123. DIGGER and JULIE then notify utilities to mark their respective facilities to help avoid damage to underground facilities, including pipelines, during excavation activities.

Congressman Rick Larsen, of Washington, introduced H.Res. 484 to increase awareness of the need for pipeline safety. Through the years, Congress has passed legislation to strengthen pipeline regulations.

Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas regularly provide a variety of pipeline safety awareness materials to customers and others who may live near pipelines. The safety awareness program includes bill inserts, brochures, web site activities, and classroom programs, among other materials. Pipeline Safety materials are available at www.peoplesgasdelivery.com and www.northshoregasdelivery.com.
