Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas Offer Tips to Help Customers Reduce Energy Use During the Summer Months

Chicago, IL – Summer has finally arrived and with temperatures expecting to soar into the nineties during the next couple of weeks, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas want their customers to know that there are ways they can conserve energy and manage those energy bills even during the hot summer months.

"Although many residents may not think about saving energy in the summer because furnaces have been turned off," said Rodrigo A. Sierra, vice president of Public Affairs, "conserving energy should be a year-round process."

Sierra says customers who can should take advantage of the Chicagoland Natural Gas Savings Program. The program offers rebates to customers of Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas who install certain types of energy-efficient products in their homes or businesses. The program can help customers lower their natural gas use and save on energy bills.

Rebates are available for:

  • Insulation
  • Water heaters
  • Furnaces
  • Clothes washers
  • Boilers

To learn more about the specific program offerings and guidelines, customers can visit peoplesgasdelivery.com or northshoregasdelivery.com and click on the logo for the Chicagoland Natural Gas Savings Program or call (866) 964-7345.

In addition to the Chicagoland Natural Gas Savings Program, Sierra offers the following tips to help customers manage their energy costs during the summer months:

Air Conditioning

In the summer months, the air conditioner's thermostat should not be set any lower than 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Likewise, the settings should not be any higher than 68 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter. Keeping to these guidelines will help maximize energy savings.

Gradually adjust the temperature on the thermostat to help ensure everyone in the family is comfortable. Reduce, or raise the temperature just one degree at a time and try it for a week. Each one-degree adjustment for an eight-hour period reduces your fuel bill costs. Gradually, you might be able to adjust three or even four degrees comfortably and save a chunk of money.

Water Heaters

Customers can reduce their water heating costs by simply lowering the thermostat setting on your water heater. For each 10 degree Fahrenheit reduction in water temperature, you can save between 3% to 5% in energy costs.

Although some manufacturers set water heater thermostats at 140 degrees Fahrenheit, most households usually only require them set at 120 degrees Fahrenheit or even 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Water heated at 140 degrees Fahrenheit also poses a safety hazard - scalding. However, if you have a dishwasher without a booster heater, it may require a water temperature within a range of 130 degrees Fahrenheit to 140 degrees Fahrenheit for optimum cleaning.

Reducing your water temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit also slows mineral buildup and corrosion in your water heater and pipes. This helps your water heater last longer and operate at its maximum efficiency.

Saving Chores for the Right Time

While cooking can heat up the kitchen, so can using the dishwasher to dry the dishes. Clothes dryers located in the house can have the same effect. These tasks are better left for the evening time or, better yet, when no one is home. Taking on labor intensive tasks can also make you feel uncomfortable during the hottest times of the day. If possible, do them in the evening or the early morning when the heat isn't so bad.
