U.S. Chamber Names Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas as Finalist for Corporate Citizenship Award

Chicago, IL - Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, the two utility companies that deliver safe and reliable natural gas to approximately 1 million customers in Chicago and 54 communities in Lake County, announced today that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center has selected them as a finalist for a Corporate Citizenship Award in the category of U.S. Community Service.

"Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas have shown leadership and commitment at a difficult time when it has mattered most," said BCLC Vice President and Executive Director Stephen Jordan. "Each finalist for the U.S. Community Service Award is a community hero."

The two utilities are being recognized for their "Team HEAT (Home Energy Assistance Together)" program to weatherize the homes of low-and fixed-income customers. The program educates residents about energy efficiency and conservation as well as energy reduction which, in turn, helps customers better manage their heating costs. Since 2004, company employees and their families have weatherized the homes of more than 500 customers through the Team HEAT initiative. Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas employees volunteer numerous hours annually in a variety of company sponsored community initiatives.

"We are extremely honored to receive recognition as a finalist," said Will Evans, president of the two utility companies. "Every day at Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, we strive to help our customers manage their energy costs and understand their options, especially during this time of a struggling economy. Team HEAT is just one example of our commitment to customers. It exemplifies the commitment of our employees to volunteering and is an excellent way for us to give back to the communities we serve."

The U.S. Community Service Award, now in its 10th year, acknowledges businesses, chambers, and associations for corporate citizenship programs that contribute to social and civic progress in U.S. communities. ARAMARK, Health Care Service Corporation, Office Depot Foundation and UPS are also finalists in this category.

The winner will be announced on December 1, at BCLC's 10th annual Corporate Citizenship Awards Dinner at the U.S. Chamber's historic headquarters in Washington, D.C. The celebration is expected to draw 300 business, civic and government officials.
