People Gas and North Shore Gas Kick Off Month-Long Energy Awareness and Winter Preparedness Campaign;

Utilities Committed to Help Customers Prepare for Winter Heating Needs and Be More Energy Efficient

Chicago, IL - As the temperatures began to drop last week, reminding Chicagoland residents that another Midwest winter lurks just around the corner, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas are urging their one million customers to begin preparing their homes and businesses now for the arrival of colder weather.

October is Energy Awareness month and the utilities are encouraging all of their customers to take the time to learn about ways they can become more energy efficient in their homes which will help them better manage their heating bills. "There are many low to no cost things that customers can do to conserve energy inside their homes," said Rodrigo A. Sierra, vice president of Public Affairs. "Customers who practice energy efficiency and conservation will be able to better manage their heating bills."

As part of Energy Awareness Month, the companies are launching a month-long campaign to promote energy efficiency, conservation, safety and winter preparedness. "Each week during Energy Awareness Month, one aspect of energy conservation and preparedness will be highlighted that will help ensure customers are not caught off-guard by the upcoming winter weather."

The Energy Awareness Month Campaign includes the following initiatives:

Mon., Oct. 5 - Peoples Gas will kick-off energy awareness month with a grass-roots marketing initiative handing out hot coffee on a brisk morning to all passersby with our "Waste Watcher Tips" on the coffee cups in addition to a reusable bag that will contain a 3M weatherization kit, information on energy conservation and information on financial assistance such as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Peoples Gas representatives will be on the corners of Dearborn/Washington and Dearborn/Randolph from 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

Thurs., Oct. 8 - Peoples Gas will host its 3rd Energy Conservation and Safety Media Event at its technical training facility from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. As the week of October 4th marks National Safety Fire Prevention Week, Peoples Gas is partnering with the Chicago Fire Department to host this media exclusive event that will cover energy efficiency, home heating safety and fire safety that may occur with the use of home appliances. The Peoples Gas Technical Training facility is located at 1235 S. Kilbourn.

Tues., Oct. 13 and Tues., Oct. 27 - From 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Peoples Gas will have a table beneath the clock in the center of City Hall handing out reusable tote bags with 3M weatherization kits, information on energy conservation and information regarding financial assistance such as LIHEAP.

Thurs., Oct. 15 and Tues., Oct. 20 - From 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Peoples Gas will be handing out hot cups of coffee with "Waste Watcher Tips" to customers at Dominick's stores on the north and south sides of the city. The utilities will also be handing out information on energy conservation and LIHEAP. The event on Oct. 15, will be held at 2101 E 71st St. and the event on Oct. 20, will be held at 5235 N. Sheridan Rd.

Wed., Oct. 28 - Peoples Gas hosts an Energy Awareness Expo and Hallo-Green Party at Waters Elementary School, 4540 N Campbell Ave, from 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Students will learn fun and easy ways to become more energy efficient during this Hallo-green themed party. 'Green' characters such as Kermit the Frog, Shrek and the Incredible Hulk will present at the event engaging the children and helping them learn what it means to be 'green'. Peoples Gas representatives and a representative from CEDA will be available to assist parents in managing their energy needs and help them find out if they are qualified for LIHEAP grants.

Every Monday in November - As LIHEAP opens to all eligible customers, Peoples Gas will be continuing to get the word out by handing out information at CTA train stops throughout the city encouraging customers to seek financial assistance. Representatives from the utility will also be handing out 100 cups of hot coffee with Waste Watcher Tips.

In addition to the Energy Awareness Month campaign, the utilities recently launched an advertising campaign to disseminate "Waste Watcher Tips" throughout Chicagoland to help customers watch their energy 'waste' lines. Many of the tips have been incorporated into the Energy Awareness campaign to increase awareness about the importance of energy conservation.

Sierra adds that customers should start weatherizing their homes, enroll in the Budget Payment Plan and seek financial assistance if they need it.
