Peoples Gas & North Shore Gas Urge Customers to Apply for LIHEAP Grants

Program Opens for ALL Eligible Customers on November 1st

Chicago, IL - On November 1, all eligible Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas customers can apply for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) funds if they are in need of assistance this heating season. The program provides grants to help customers struggling to pay their energy bills and is available to help customers pay outstanding bills, reconnect service and maintain their home's natural gas service.

While natural gas prices are lower than they were last year, which could result in lower winter heating bills, the utilities are still encouraging customers to act quickly if they are struggling financially.

"During these challenging economic times, many more residents may need help making ends meets," said Rodrigo A. Sierra, vice president of Public Affairs for Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas. "The LIHEAP program considers the last 30 days of income of all household residents in determining eligibility and we strongly encourage those who need help to apply for a grant."

To apply for a LIHEAP grant, customers must have proof of income, a copy of their utility bill and social security numbers for everyone in the household. Customers may be eligible for a grant if their income is 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines according to the following chart:

Family Income Guidelines
Size of Family30 Days Income
1 $1,354
2 $1,821
3 $2,289
4 $2,756
5 $3,224
6 $3,691
7 $4,159
8 $4,626

To apply and find the location of the closest LIHEAP application site, Peoples Gas customers can call CEDA's hotline at: 1-800-571-CEDA (2332) or visit www.cedaorg.net/www2/EnergyConservation.html. North Shore Gas customers can call the Community Action Partnership of Lake County at 1-847-249-4330. Customers can also visit www.peoplesgasdelivery.com or www.northshoregasdelivery.com for a list of application sites and guidelines.

The companies are also recommending weatherization and energy efficiency to help reduce energy usage and lower bills. Customers should also consider enrolling in the Budget Payment Plan to spread payments more evenly over the year. The company said both are key tools in helping customers to use energy more efficiently, stabilize their bills and manage their accounts during this tough environment of economic instability.

On Saturday, November 7, Peoples Gas will host its sixth annual Team H.E.A.T. (Home Energy Assistance Together) community service winterization project. More than 75 employees from Peoples Gas, along with members of community organizations and Chicago Public School students, will weatherize the homes of low-income and fixed-income residents in the Englewood Community.

In addition, Peoples Gas, along with ComEd and CEDA, will host a series of one-stop heating fairs in communities throughout the city to take applications and provide information to residents about energy assistance programs and services.

For information on the dates, times and locations of the heating fairs, as well as tips on energy efficiency and conservation, please visit our websites at www.peoplesgasdelivery.com and www.northshoregasdelivery.com.

"Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas are committed to delivering safety, warmth and reliability to our customers year-round," said Sierra. "To help fulfill that mission, we are working with community groups, area churches and elected officials to provide customers with information on how to use energy more efficiently, budget payment programs to help stabilize bills, and grants for those who need assistance."
