Peoples Gas Hosts 6th Annual Team HEAT & One Stop Utility Assistance Fair

Englewood Events Help to Prepare Residents for Winter

Chicago, IL - On Saturday, November 7, Peoples Gas will host two major events as part of its community outreach efforts to provide customers with information to stay safe and warm as the winter season approaches: a community home weatherization project to help low and fixed income families reduce energy usage and costs; and a one stop utility assistance fair to help families struggling to pay their heating bills.

Peoples Gas employee volunteers will help up to 100 families get a jump on winter as they participate in the 6th Annual Team H.E.A.T. (Home Energy Assistance Together), a community service weatherization project. More than 100 volunteers, including employees from Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, their families and friends, Chicago Public School students and members of community organizations will team up to apply weather stripping around doors and caulking plastic sheeting around windows to help residents reduce their energy usage, a tool in helping to manage their energy costs.

"We are very proud of our employees who selflessly give up their personal and family time to make such a significant contribution to the communities we serve," said Rodrigo A. Sierra, Vice President of Public Affairs. "Weatherization and conservation are important tools during the heating season to help manage energy costs," says Sierra.

Peoples Gas will also provide the homeowners with energy efficiency and safety packages which include the following items to be used in the homes:

  • Carbon Monoxide detector, courtesy of FIRST ALERT
  • Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFL)
  • Vital information about Energy Efficiency, Managing Energy Costs and Seeking Financial Assistance to help with energy bills.
  • Coupon for a $5 rebate for a 3M Window Insulation Kit

Also on Saturday, the utility will host the first in a series of one-stop utility assistance fairs. Peoples Gas, along with representatives from CEDA and ComEd, will be on site at the Walter Reed Elementary School at 6350 S. Stewart from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to provide information on financial resources and programs that are available to assist customers.

Utility assistance fairs will be held at the following locations:

  • Saturday, Nov. 7 - Walter Reed Elementary School (6350 S. Stewart) 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 10 - Rainbow PUSH Headquarters (930 E. 50th Street) 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 14 - Westside Technical (2800 S. Western) 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 21 - Olive Harvey College (10001 S. Woodlawn) 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Saturday, Dec. 5 - Malcolm X College (1900 W. Van Buren) 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Saturday, Dec. 12 - Daley College (7500 S. Pulaski) 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

At the utility assistance fairs, CEDA will accept applications from Peoples Gas customers who are eligible to apply for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) grants. The program provides grants to help customers pay outstanding bills, reconnect service and maintain their home's natural gas service. Customers may be eligible for a grant if their income is 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

To apply and find the location of the closest LIHEAP application site, Peoples Gas customers can call CEDA's hotline at: 1-800-571-CEDA (2332) or visit www.cedaorg.net/www2/EnergyConservation.html. North Shore Gas customers can call the Community Action Partnership of Lake County at 1-847-249-6050. Customers can also visit www.peoplesgasdelivery.com for a list of application sites and guidelines, as well as for tips on keeping warm, energy conservation and options for managing their energy bills.

"Each year, we look toward our Team H.E.A.T. and utility assistance fairs as a way to stress the importance of weatherization and energy conservation," says Sierra. "We are extremely appreciative of our community and corporate partners, including CEDA, 3M and First Alert for their efforts in working with us to ensure that residents are armed with the information they need to stay safe and warm during the winter season."
