Peoples Gas & North Shore Gas Urge Customers to Apply for LIHEAP Grants

Program Opens September 1 for Seniors and Those With Disabilities

Chicago, IL – The summer of 2010 may have been one of the warmest summers in several years, but as fall approaches, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, the two utility companies serving approximately one million customers in the City of Chicago and 54 communities on the North Shore, are starting their campaign to help customers prepare for the upcoming heating season.

The two utilities have begun notifying eligible customers about the early application period for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) which opens on September 1. The September 1 opening date applies to households with seniors (60+) and people with disabilities. The program provides grants to help customers struggling to pay their energy bills and is administered in Cook County by the Community and Economic Development Association (CEDA), and in Lake County by the Community Action Partnership of Lake County (CAPLC).

To inform customers, Peoples and North Shore are sending recorded phone calls to customers who may qualify for LIHEAP grants during the early opening period. The phone calls urge customers to contact CEDA or CAPLC to determine if they are eligible for the LIHEAP funding, and how to apply for the help. Grants are available to help customers pay outstanding bills, reconnect service, and maintain their home’s natural gas service.

While gas prices have remained steady during the summer months, the utilities are encouraging customers to consider signing up for Budget Billing to help manage heating bills year-round. Budget Billing spreads annual payments more evenly over the year to help customers plan their utility payments and help to manage fluctuating gas prices. The gas charge on customers' bills reflects what Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas pay for natural gas on the open market. The utilities sell gas to customers at that same price without a mark up, and do not profit from the sale of gas.

In addition, the company urges all customers to reduce energy use as a key tool in helping to manage heating bills. "Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas are committed to delivering safe, warmth and reliable natural gas to our customers year-round," said Adrienne M. Jones, director, Government and Community Relations.

"To help fulfill that mission, we are working with community groups, area churches and elected officials to provide customers with information on how to use energy more efficiently, budget payment programs to help stabilize bills, and grants for those who need assistance."

To apply for a LIHEAP grant, customers must have proof of income, a copy of their utility bill and social security numbers for everyone in the household. Customers may be eligible for a grant if their income is 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines according to the following chart:

Family Income Guidelines
Size of Family Monthly Income
1 $1,354
2 $1,821
3 $2,289
4 $2,756
5 $3,224
6 $3,691
7 $4,159
8 $4,626
9 $5,094
10 $5,561
