Peoples Gas & North Shore Gas Urge Customers to Apply for LIHEAP Grants

Customers Who Are Disconnected Can Begin Applying on October 1

CHICAGO, IL - Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas are urging customers who service is disconnected to apply and see if they are eligible to receive LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) funds. LIHEAP, which opened on September 1 for households with seniors (60+) and people with disabilities, will be available as of October 1, for customers who are disconnected and households with children under the age of five years.

The program provides grants to help customers struggling to pay their energy bills. It is administered in Cook County by the Community and Economic Development Association (CEDA), and in Lake County by the Community Action Partnership of Lake County (CAPLC). Grants are available to help customers pay outstanding bills, reconnect service, and maintain their home’s natural gas service. The two utilities are also encouraging customers to consider signing up for Budget Billing to help manage heating bills year-round. Budget Billing spreads annual payments more evenly over the year to help customers plan their utility payments.

Budget Billing and energy conservation are key tools in helping customers to manage heating bills and fluctuating gas prices. The gas charge on customers' bills reflects what Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas pay for natural gas on the open market. The utilities sell gas to customers at that same price without a mark up. To apply for a LIHEAP grant, customers must have proof of income, a copy of their utility bill and social security numbers for everyone in the household. Customers may be eligible for a grant if their income is 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines according to the following chart:

Family Income Guidelines
Size of Family Last 30 Days' Income
1 $1,354
2 $1,821
3 $2,289
4 $2,756
5 $3,224
6 $3,691
7 $4,159
8 $4,626
9 $5,094
10 $5,561

To apply or to find the location of the closest LIHEAP application site, Peoples Gas customers can call CEDA's hotline at: 1-800-571-CEDA (2332) or visit http://www.cedaorg.net/www2/energyassistance.html. North Shore Gas customers can call the Community Action Partnership of Lake County at 1-847-249-4330. Customers can also visit www.peoplesgasdelivery.com or www.northshoregasdelivery.com for a list of application sites and guidelines. The program will open to all other eligible customers on Nov. 1.
