Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas Prices Decrease for November

The Utilities Remind Customers About Programs to Manage Bills and Reduce Energy Usage

Chicago, IL - Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas announced today that their customers will see lower gas charges for November 2010 than for October 2010. The lower prices result from projected decreases in market prices for natural gas supplies.

Natural Gas is measured in therms. A therm is a unit of measure of gas like a mile measures distance. On your gas bill, the gas charge is shown in cents per therm. The cost of .4200 cents per therm for Peoples Gas during the month of November represents a 13 percent decrease when compared to October's price of .4827 cents per therm.

North Shore Gas customers will experience a similar decline. November's cost of .4546 cents per therm represents an 11 percent decrease from October’s gas price of .5130 cents per therm. This per-unit charge can change each month and is filed with the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC).

The gas charge reflects what Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas pay for natural gas on the open market. The utilities sell gas to customers at that same price without a mark up, and do not profit from the sale of gas. The lower gas prices will be reflected on customers’ bills during the next billing cycle.

While lower natural gas prices are certainly welcome as winter approaches, the utilities continue to urge customers who are having financial difficulties to see if they qualify for a LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) grant.

Following two priority periods in September and October for customers who met certain criteria, LIHEAP is now open for everyone to apply as of November 1.

To apply, Peoples Gas customers can visit a CEDA intake site or call CEDA at 1-800-571-2332. North Shore Gas customers can call the Community Action Partnership of Lake County (CAPLC) at 1-847-249-4330.

In addition to financial assistance grants, the utilities urge customers to enroll in the Budget Billing Plan. The budget payment plan helps keep bill payments more consistent throughout the year. This plan offers stability that avoids the gas bill peaks of winter and can be coupled with energy conservation as two good tools to help manage energy bills.

Customers can sign up for Budget Billing at www.peoplesgasdelivery.com or www.northshoregasdelivery.com or eligible customers can simply pay the budget payment amount on their bill to automatically enroll.
