Peoples Gas Hosts 7th Annual Team HEAT & Community Heating Assistance Resource Fair to Help Residents Prepare for Winter

Chicago, IL - Just as colder temperatures begin to settle in, Peoples Gas will host two major events on Saturday, November 6 as part of its community outreach efforts to provide customers with information to stay safe and warm as winter approaches.

The first event, the company's 7th Annual Team H.E.A.T. (Home Energy Assistance Together), will take place in the 19th Ward (Alderman Virginia A. Rugai) and the 12th Ward (Alderman George A. Cardenas) from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Team H.E.A.T. is a home weatherization project to help low-and fixed-income families reduce energy use and costs.

More than 80 volunteers will help approximately 100 families get a jump on winter. The volunteers, including employees from Peoples Gas, their families and friends, Chicago Public School students who earn service learning hours for their participation and members of community organizations, will team up to apply plastic sheeting on windows and weather stripping and caulking around doors and windows.

Peoples Gas will also provide the homeowners with winter preparation and safety packages, which include the following items to be used in the homes:

  • Carbon monoxide detector, courtesy of FIRST ALERT.
  • Window insulation kit, courtesy of 3M.
  • Information about conservation, managing energy costs and seeking financial assistance to help with energy bills.

Also on Saturday, the company will co-host the first of three Community Resource Assistance Fairs. Representatives from Peoples Gas, ComEd, CEDA (Community Economic Development Association) and a host of community organizations will be on site at Kennedy King College, 740 W 63rd Street, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to provide information on financial resources and programs available to assist customers. The Community Resource Assistance Fair at Kennedy King College is sponsored in conjunction with the office of Congressman Bobby Rush.

At the Community Resource Fairs, Peoples Gas customers can sign up for Budget Billing, and CEDA will accept applications for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) grants. The program provides grants to help customers pay outstanding bills, reconnect service and maintain their home's natural gas service. Customers may be eligible for a grant if their income is 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

To apply for LIHEAP, customers must have proof of household income for the last 30 days, a copy of their current utility bill and Social Security numbers for everyone in the household. Peoples Gas customers can call CEDA's hotline at: 1-800-571-CEDA (2332) or visit to find the closest LIHEAP intake site. Customers can also visit for a list of intake sites and guidelines, as well as for tips on keeping warm, energy conservation and options for managing their energy bills.

Additional Community Resource Assistance Fairs will be held at the following locations:

  • Saturday, November 13, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Casa Central Auditorium - 1335 N. California Avenue Sponsored in conjunction with the office of Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez
  • Saturday, December 4, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Malcolm X College - 1900 W. Van Buren Street Sponsored in conjunction with the office of Congressman Danny K. Davis

"Each year, our employees look forward to volunteering for these events" says Kathy Hartman, Senior Director Corporate Communications. "This is another example where they willingly give up their personal time to give back to the communities we serve. In addition, we appreciate our community and corporate partners and elected officials for working with us to ensure that residents are prepared with the information they need to stay safe and warm during the winter season."
