Peoples Gas Provides Tips for Staying Safe and Warm this Holiday Season

Chicago, IL – As if on cue, colder temperatures have arrived throughout the Chicagoland area just in time to usher in Thanksgiving day and the official start of the holiday season. As residents begin preparing those holiday meals for family and friends, Peoples Gas encourages everyone to put home safety at the forefront.

"This is the season when both furnaces and stoves may be working overtime," says Kathryn Hartman, senior director of Corporate Communications. "Ensuring that furnaces and kitchen appliances are in top operating condition will not only help them run efficiently, but will keep families and friends safe."

Along with providing safe and reliable natural gas, Peoples Gas wants to ensure that its customers are prepared with information that will enable them to use their heating equipment and appliances in a safe manner.

The following tips will not only ease holiday anxiety, but will ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season:

Gas and Furnace Safety Tips

  • Make sure the furnace is inspected and cleaned before turning it on.
  • Keep the area around the furnace clutter free to avoid a fire hazard; never store flammables near a furnace.
  • Check furnace filters monthly and clean or replace them when necessary.
  • Make sure that furnace panels and grills are in place and that the fan compartment door is closed when the furnace is on; leaving these doors open could cause carbon monoxide (CO) to build up in living areas.
  • Make sure the flames of a furnace are blue; a yellow flame could indicate the presence of CO.
  • Understand the dangers and symptoms of carbon monoxide, and have CO detectors installed.
  • Have all fuel-burning appliances, flues, vents and chimneys checked regularly.

Boiler Safety Tips

  • Regular servicing of your boiler ensures that it is running efficiently.
  • Ensure the boiler is correctly flued.
  • Ensure the boiler has the correct ventilation.

Stove/Oven Safety Tips

  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Keep the stovetop and oven clean; buildup of grease and debris can ignite easily.
  • Keep stove area clear of flammable materials; don't leave oven mitts, paper or cloth towels near the stove.
  • Do not place or spray aerosols near an open flame.
  • Cook on back burners and turn pot handles in to prevent accidental spillage.
  • Have a fire extinguisher available no more than 10 feet from the stove or oven.
  • Make sure smoke detectors are working and batteries are changed at least once a year.

Don't let the rush and excitement of the holiday season keep you from staying protected. Find additional information on how to stay safe this winter season as well as other safety tips.
