Peoples Gas Announces the Opening of Share the Warmth

Program Provides Matching Grants Toward Natural Gas Bills

Chicago, IL - While the holiday season has come and gone, the freezing temperatures left behind serve as a constant reminder that winter is still here. Furnaces have been running nonstop to combat winter's chill. Peoples Gas encourages customers who are struggling financially to pay their heating bills to apply for a grant from the utility's Share the Warmth fund which opened on January 1.

The Share the Warmth program, an energy assistance program funded through donations from Peoples Gas, North Shore Gas, the company's employees and customers and the city of Chicago, provides matching grants up to $200 for those who qualify. The program is administered by CEDA (Community Economic Development Association). Customers can call CEDA at 1-800-571-CEDA (2332) to locate the nearest application site.

Since 2000, Share the Warmth has provided more than $7 million in heating assistance grants to more than 35,000 families. Residents whose income is at or below 200% of the poverty level are encouraged to apply to see if they are eligible.

In addition to Share the Warmth, there are still LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) funds available. LIHEAP, which is open to all eligible customers, helps to pay outstanding bills, reconnect service and maintain natural gas service. LIHEAP is also administered by CEDA. Customers who have already received a LIHEAP grant, or are planning to apply for LIHEAP, may also be eligible to receive a Share the Warmth grant.

During these hard times, many families are still struggling with the effects of the economy and need financial assistance. Customers who want to help can donate to the Share the Warmth fund any time of the year, or make monthly contributions throughout the year by choosing one of the following options:

  • Simply check the Share the Warmth box located on the mail back portion of your bill and add one dollar to your payment, and one dollar will be added to your bill each month.
  • Make your contribution on-line by visiting My Account.
  • If you are not a Peoples Gas customer and would still like to make a donation, please mail back a check or money order made payable to CEDA-Share the Warmth to:

    Peoples Gas
    Attn: Patricia Bridges
130 East Randolph Street, 18th Fl
    Chicago, IL 60601

Customers who don't qualify for the Share the Warmth or LIHEAP programs are encouraged to enroll in Budget Billing. Budget Billing allows customers to spread their natural gas bills and payments more evenly over the year. This enables them to have a better sense of how much they will pay each month.

Customers are also reminded that weatherization and conservation can help them stay warm as well as reduce usage and bills. Peoples Gas recommends that customers weatherize their homes, enroll in the Budget Billing and seek financial assistance if they need it. Information about all of these initiatives can be found at www.peoplesgasdelivery.com.
