North Shore Gas Urges Customers to Apply for Financial Assistance

LIHEAP Funds Remain Available

Chicago, IL – As temperatures head into the sixties this week, many winter-weary Lake County residents are still struggling with the economic aftermath of a long hard winter that included colder than normal temperatures and massive amounts of snow.

North Shore Gas reminds customers who are struggling to pay their heating bills that there are still LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) funds available. LIHEAP provides grants to help customers pay outstanding bills, reconnect service and maintain their home's natural gas service. LIHEAP, a federally-funded program, is administered by the Community Action Partnership of Lake County.

To inform customers, North Shore Gas is sending out post cards to customers who may be eligible for a LIHEAP grant. The post cards urge customers to contact CEDA to determine if they are eligible for the LIHEAP funding, and to learn how to apply for the help. LIHEAP eligibility is based on a household's last 30 days of income. Customers who have lost their jobs or had their hours reduced may be eligible. "It's important that customers know these funds are still available," says Adrienne M. Jones, director, Government and Community Relations. "If you need financial assistance to help pay toward an outstanding bill, we urge you to act quickly."

To apply for a LIHEAP grant, customers must provide proof of income, a copy of their utility bill and social security numbers for everyone in the household. Customers may be eligible for a grant if their income is 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines according to the following chart:

Family Income Guidelines
Size of Family 30 Days Income
1 $1,354
2 $1,821
3 $2,289
4 $2,756
5 $3,224
6 $3,691
7 $4,159
8 $4,626
9 $5,094
10 $5,561

To find the location of the closest LIHEAP application site, North Shore Gas customers can call the Community Action Partnership of Lake County at 1-847-249-4330. During the 2009-2010 heating season, approximately 50,000 customers took advantage of LIHEAP assistance.

The utility is also encouraging customers to take advantage of various other programs and services to help them use energy more efficiently, stabilize their bills and manage their accounts during this environment of tough economic times.

North Shore Gas recommends that customers sign up for Budget Billing to help manage heating bills year-round. Budget Billing spreads annual payments more evenly over the year to help customers plan their utility payments.
