North Shore Gas Hosts Safety Forum

Focus on Pipeline Safety and Other Safety Initiatives

Zion, IL – Representatives from North Shore Gas (NSG) hosted a forum today to mark National Safety Month and remind municipal and construction managers about how to work safely near natural gas pipelines.

Held at the Illinois Beach Resort and Conference Center, the forum emphasized ways to keep construction workers and the public safe by following proper procedures to avoid striking underground natural gas pipelines.

"It was an opportunity to come together and have an open dialogue about safety-related issues," said Torrence Hinton, operations manager for North Shore Gas. "When we’re all on the same page and aware of the rules and policies about working near natural gas pipelines, it strengthens our ability to reduce pipeline strikes and improve overall safety."

The safety forum comes on the heels of a month-long campaign associated with National Safe Digging Month in April. The campaign was put in place by the Common Ground Alliance (CGA) to communicate the importance of professionals and homeowners following safe digging procedures by calling JULIE at 811 before beginning excavation projects. Each utility will mark their own underground facilities for free, helping prevent injuries, property damage and inconvenient outages. David Vanwy from JULIE gave a presentation that qualified participants for one hour of continuing education credit toward a Water Operator's Renewal license.

Among those in attendance were officials from the communities of Beach Park, Lake Forest, Libertyville and North Chicago, and several representatives from the Lake County Department of Transportation.

In addition to providing information about pipeline safety, NSG representatives discussed upcoming projects planned for area communities and answered questions about the delivery of natural gas to homes and businesses.
