North Shore Gas Urges Customers to Apply for LIHEAP Grants

Program Opens Sept. 1 for Seniors and Those With Disabilities

WAUKEGAN, IL – The temperatures may still be warm and balmy, but as summer draws to a close, North Shore Gas is reminding customers about the early application period for LIHEAP (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program) which opens on Sept. 1.

LIHEAP provides grants to help customers pay outstanding bills, reconnect service, and maintain their home’s natural gas service. The Sept. 1 opening date applies to households with seniors (60+) and people with disabilities.

“We don’t want anyone who may be eligible to miss out on these funds,” says Adrienne M. Jones, director of Government and Community Relations. “That’s why we are also working with community groups, area churches and elected officials to provide customers with this information.”

The following documents are needed to apply for a LIHEAP grant:

  • Proof of gross income from all household members for the 30-day prior period to the application date.
  • Copy of most recent utility bill.
  • Proof of Social Security Numbers of all household members.
  • If a member of your household receives TANF, you must bring their Medical Eligibility Card.
  • Applicants that have their utilities included in the rent must bring proof of rental agreement stating monthly rental amount, that utilities are included, and landlord contact information. (Rent costs must be greater than 30% of household gross income for 30 days prior to application).

Customers may be eligible for a grant if their income is 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines according to the following chart:

Family Income Guidelines
Size of Family 30 Days Income
1 $1,361
2 $1,839
3 $2,316
4 $2,794
5 $3,271
6 $3,749
7 $4,226
8 $4,704
9 $5,181
10 $5,659

The company is also encouraging customers to consider signing up for Budget Billing to help manage heating bills year-round. Budget Billing spreads annual payments more evenly over the year to help customers plan their utility payments and help to manage fluctuating gas prices.

To apply and find the location of the closest LIHEAP application site, North Shore Gas customers can call the Community Action Partnership of Lake County at 1-847-249-4330. The program will open to all other eligible customers on Nov. 1.

Customers can also visit for a list of application sites and guidelines, as well as tips on conservation and energy efficiency, two great tools in helping to manage energy costs.
