Minnesota Energy Resources announces the winners of the "It's Worth the Energy" Grant Opportunity

Rosemount, MN - Minnesota Energy Resources (MERC) has announced the three winners in their "It's Worth the Energy" grant opportunity. Organizations were encouraged to submit proposals for projects that improve the community in one of three areas: Environment, Community or Human Services. Three finalists were selected and were voted on by visitors to the Minnesota Energy Resources' Facebook page.

  • 1st Place – Northshore Area Partners, Silver Bay in northeast Minnesota – $3000 towards good nutrition, exercise and the socialization of local seniors. Program Director Susan Michels said, "We sent daily e-mail reminders and daily posts on our NSAP Facebook page. Participants got the word out through 'The Tribe' supporters of NSAP throughout the country and internationally. We also sent press releases to local papers, cable TV and in our NSAP newsletter mailing of 500 supporters. They put a lot of energy into it and yes, it was worth it.".
  • 2nd Place – Worthington YMCA in southwest Minnesota – $2000 towards improving the lifestyle habits of the local Hispanic and Latino population through increased physical activities and good nutrition. Executive Director/CEO Andy Johnson said, "We really appreciate being able to be a participant in the online Grant contest. MER has been a long time supporter of our mission and know we could not provide our services without the support that MER and others throughout our community give to us."
  • 3rd Place – Family Pathways, Cambridge in east central Minnesota – $1000 towards their annual Affordable Prom Party for low-income teens. Youth Services Manager Bonita Carlson said, "The kids are all looking forward to this event and with Minnesota Energy Resources' donation, everyone will go home with a photo and a memorable evening including our special needs teens from central Minnesota."

Eligible organizations held 501c3 non-profit status from the IRS, have an active social media presence on Facebook, have a cooperative attitude to partner with Minnesota Energy Resources and be in good standing with the local community. The top three projects, selected by an independent panel of judges, were voted on from October 3 through October 20, 2012.
