Peoples Gas Hosts 8th Annual Team HEAT & Community Outreach Days to Help Residents Prepare for Winter

Chicago, IL - The calendar may say that winter doesn’t officially arrive until December 21, but a sure sign that winter is close is the arrival of Peoples Gas' 8th Annual Team H.E.A.T. (Home Energy Assistance Together), a home weatherization project to help residents manage their energy use and costs. On Saturday, November 5, more than 60 employees from Peoples Gas, along with their friends, families and Chicago Public School students who earn service learning hours for their participation, are volunteering their time to weatherize homes of low-and fixed-income families in the 15th Ward (Alderman Toni Foulkes) and the 23th Ward (Alderman Michael Zalewski). The volunteers will work in teams and apply weather stripping around doors, caulk open spaces and drafts around doors and windows and apply plastic sheeting over windows to seal out drafts.

Peoples Gas will also provide the homeowners with winter preparation and safety packages, which include the following items:

  • Carbon monoxide alarms, generously donated by First Alert
  • Information about financial assistance to help with energy bills, and information on energy efficiency and conservation

Also on Saturday, the company will host the first of two Community Outreach Days. Representatives from Peoples Gas, ComEd, and CEDA (Community Economic Development Association) will be present to provide information on financial resources and programs available to assist customers. Representatives from state, city and human service organizations will also be available to provide information to residents.

The Community Outreach Days will be held as follows:

  • Saturday, Nov. 5, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Kennedy King College - 740 W. 63rd Street
  • Saturday, December 3, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Malcolm X College - 1900 W. Van Buren Street

Peoples Gas customers can have their accounts reviewed and sign up for Budget Billing and other programs at the community outreach days and CEDA will accept applications from customers who are eligible to apply for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) grants and the PIPP (Percentage of Income Payment Plan) program. Customers may be eligible for these programs if their income is 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines and may apply for both, but are only eligible to receive benefits from one program.

To apply for LIHEAP and PIPP, customers must have proof of household income for the last 30 days, a copy of their current utility bill and Social Security numbers for everyone in the household.

Customers who are unable to attend the community outreach days can still apply for either program through CEDA. Peoples Gas customers can call CEDA’s hotline at: 1-800-571-CEDA (2332), visit www.cedaorg.net or www.peoplesgasdelivery.com to find the location of the closest application site.
