North Shore Gas Crews Connecting New Gas Main in Waukegan

Controlled Burn Will Create Large Flame in the Sky

Waukegan, IL - Representatives of North Shore Gas want to alert Waukegan residents and those in the surrounding communities of a condition that will occur in the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 16.

NSG is currently relocating approximately 3,000 feet of 12 inch high pressure gas main and 10,000 feet of medium pressure gas main in Delany Road from Sunset Avenue north to Yorkhouse Road in Waukegan, Illinois. This relocation is necessary for the road improvements scheduled by Lake County Department of Transportation for Delany Road.

Crews are in the last stages of the pipe relocation process and on Wednesday, will be starting to connect the new main at the northeast corner of Delany Road and Yorkhouse Road. The new connections require crews to evacuate or burn off the gas from the existing high pressure main and release it into the atmosphere.

The gas is being burned off through a 50-foot-high flare pipe that may produce a flame 40 to 50 feet above the flare pipe. The flare-off will occur in the early morning hours and most likely last for a few hours. Residents are assured that the release of gas is being done in the safest way possible and should not be alarmed if they see that flame appear. The new connections will not affect service to customers.

While the pipe relocation process and connection work is taking place, residents who can smell gas or suspect a gas leak inside or outside their home or business should not hesitate to call North Shore Gas to report it at 866-556-6005.
