Peoples Gas Reminds Do-It-Yourselfers to Put Safety First

August 11 is National Call 8-1-1 Before You Dig Day

CHICAGO, IL. - Peoples Gas experts will be available on location at three Chicago Home Depot stores, 1232 W. North Avenue, 200 W. 87th Street and 1300 S. Jefferson Street, on Saturday, August 11 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to increase public awareness and have underground lines, pipes and cables marked so "you know what's below" - and complete outside improvements safely. August 11th is National Call 8-1-1 Before You Dig Day, which is the nationally designated date to remind citizens to obey the law and take precaution by calling before digging.

Home improvement stores like Home Depot, which attract do-it-your-selfers, are the perfect locations to educate residents about natural gas safety and to remind them why they should call 8-1-1 to mark utility lines before beginning any major digging projects like planting a tree, installing a sprinkler system or constructing a deck in the backyard.

"Knowing where utility lines are buried before each digging project helps protect those who dig from injury, expense and penalties," said John Just, general manager, field operations, Peoples Gas. "One easy toll-free call to 811, regardless of where you are calling from, will get the location of underground utility lines marked for free."

Peoples Gas encourages contractors, workers and residents before planning any work that requires digging to follow pipeline safety procedures and be aware of natural gas pipelines buried underneath their property. In certain cases, this can be only a few inches from the surface and easy striking distance even for shallow digging projects. Chicago residents must call 8-1-1 at least 48 hours before planning to dig.

Peoples Gas will also have experts on hand to present do-it-your-selfers with even more ways to stretch their dollars by taking advantage of energy efficiency rebates and incentives offered by the Peoples Gas Natural Gas Savings Program. Owners of single-family homes and smaller multi-family buildings are eligible for rebates when they install certain types of energy-saving products. The current program runs through May 31, 2013 and includes rebate offers up to $750 for complete system replacements (furnace and central air conditioner); $600 for boilers; $500 for furnaces and 30 cents per square foot for attic insulation.
