MEDIA ADVISORY: North Shore Gas Crews Upgrade Natural Gas Pipeline in Buffalo Grove

Controlled Burn Will Create Large Flame in the Sky

Buffalo Grove, IL — Representatives of North Shore Gas want to alert Buffalo Grove residents and those in the surrounding communities of a planned natural gas flare-off which will begin at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 25th at North Shore Gas' Lake Cook gate station, just north of Lake Cook Road and west of Metra's North Central commuter rail line. All required safety precautions will be in place during this required operation.

North Shore Gas is currently upgrading sections of a 24" high pressure transmission pipeline as part of our standard pipeline integrity program. In order to make the necessary upgrades, North Shore Gas crews must first evacuate and burn off the natural gas remaining in the transmission pipeline.

The gas will be burned off through a 50-foot-high flare pipe that may produce a flame 40 to 50 feet above the pipe. The flare-off is likely to last approximately five hours. Residents and commuters can be assured that the release of gas is being done in the safest way possible and should not be alarmed if they see the flame appear. The flare-off will not affect natural gas service to customers.

While the flare-off and pipeline upgrade work is taking place, residents who may smell gas or suspect a gas leak inside or outside their home or business should call North Shore Gas to report it at 866-556-6005.
