Peoples Gas Joins the City of Chicago to Prepare Residents for Winter Season

Chicago, IL – With only three weeks until the official start of winter, Peoples Gas encourages customers to put cold weather home safety at the forefront. Having furnaces and boilers inspected, ensuring appliances are in good working order and installing and remembering to test carbon monoxide detectors, are just some of the ways to help keep families and friends safe during the upcoming holiday season and throughout the year.

"The holiday season can be very hectic for families as they host social gatherings which often involves more cooking," said Tom Wivinis, senior natural gas instructor. "If colder temperatures prevail, furnaces are also working overtime. We want to make sure customers have the right information to use their heating equipment and appliances safely. Now is a great time to ensure that everything is working properly."

Peoples Gas offers the following tips to ensure residents have a warm and safe holiday season:

Winter Natural Gas Safety Tips

  • Regular inspection of your boiler/furnace will ensure it is running safely and efficiently.
  • Ensure natural gas appliances are flued correctly and have the correct ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) build up in living areas.
  • Installations and inspections of appliances should always be carried out by a licensed contractor.
  • When appliances are lit, make sure the flames are blue; a yellow flame could indicate the presence of carbon monoxide.
  • Keep the area around natural gas appliances clutter free to avoid a fire hazard; never store flammables near a furnace.
  • Understand the dangers and symptoms of carbon monoxide and have CO detectors installed and test regularly. Change the batteries at least every six months.

Snow Removal & Ice Build-up

  • Carefully clear the area around your natural gas meter and regulator to help ensure their proper and continuous operation by using a broom to brush deep snow away as shovels or other removal equipment could damage meters and regulators.
  • Keep vents free of snow and ice buildup and don't let ice accumulate on your regulator. A blocked vent could lead to the under or over pressurization of natural gas in the home.
