Peoples Gas Urges Customers to Apply for LIHEAP Assistance

Hosts a Heating Fair to Help Residents Prepare for Winter

Chicago, IL – LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) is open for general enrollment and Peoples Gas is encouraging residents who are struggling financially, to apply and see if they are eligible to receive funds. LIHEAP is a federally-funded program that provides grants to help customers pay outstanding bills, reconnect natural gas service and maintain their home's service.

Customers who are eligible to apply for LIHEAP grants if their income is 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines as follows:

Customers should bring the following documents with them if applying for a LIHEAP grant:

  • Proof of gross income from all household members for the last 30 days
  • Copy of most recent utility bill.
  • Proof of Social Security Numbers of all household members.
  • A Medical Eligibility Card for any household member receiving TANF; and
  • Copy of rental agreement in cases where utilities are included in the rent

LIHEAP is administered in Cook County by CEDA (Community Economic Development Organization). To apply and find the location of the closest application site, Peoples Gas customers can call CEDA’s hotline at: 1-800-571-CEDA (2332) or visit www.cedaorg.net. Customers can also visit www.peoplesgasdelivery.com for a list of application sites and guidelines.

The utility is also hosting a heating fair to provide residents with access to resources. Peoples Gas, along with representatives from CEDA and ComEd, will provide information on financial resources and programs that are available to assist customers, answer questions and assist residents in applying for programs. Representatives from human service organizations will also be on site to provide information to residents.

Practicing energy efficiency in the home is a great way to save and customers can take advantage of the Peoples Gas Natural Gas Savings Program which offers incentives for energy-saving upgrades to help customers better manage their energy bills. Now though December 31, 2012, owners of single-family homes and smaller multi-family buildings can get an additional 50% of the normal rebate. This special 50% offer includes rebates for all qualifying boilers, boiler reset controls, furnaces and water heaters.

For example, the normal rebate for an energy-efficient furnace (95% AFUE) is $500. Customers, who purchase that furnace, have it installed and submit the appropriate paperwork by December 31 will receive a 50% rebate of $750 through the program.
