Natural Gas Pipeline Safety Key Focus of Annual Excavator's Breakfast

CHICAGO, IL – Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, the two utilities serving more than one million customers in the state of Illinois, joined a host of companies, agencies, project managers and equipment operators in supporting The Greater Chicago Damage Prevention Council's 15th Annual Excavator's Breakfast. Held earlier today at the University of Illinois at Chicago's (UIC) Student Center East, the breakfast is a rite of spring and an informal kick-off to the construction season.

Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, along with other contractors, utilities and government agencies are committed to pipeline safety by coordinating the design, permitting, locating and construction of underground projects in Chicago. Attendees of the annual meeting work together to provide information aimed at reducing damages through public awareness and safe digging practices.

"In 2012 we saw third party damages go from 769 damages in 2011 to 1156 damages due to the numerous public improvement projects that began construction this past summer," said Joseph Kaczmarski, engineer for the Peoples Gas System Integrity Group. "Sponsoring and attending the annual breakfast is one of the many efforts the System Integrity Group is partaking in to help build workforce awareness throughout the city of Chicago and to reduce the number of third party damages in 2013."

The breakfast was also an opportunity for the two utilities to reinforce the importance of natural gas pipeline safety. Businesses and contractors attending the conference were encouraged to meet with Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas representatives to learn about essential natural gas pipeline safety precautions and procedures. Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas would also like to remind contractors and customers that anyone planning work involving excavation in Chicago must call the DIGGER hotline at (312) 744-7000 or 811 at least 48 hours before planning to dig to have the buried utilities marked for free. Outside the City of Chicago, call JULIE at 811 or (800) 892-0123.

To ensure the long-term safety and reliability of its natural gas pipeline system, Peoples Gas is in the third year of a program to upgrade its infrastructure by replacing cast iron and ductile iron main with modern polyethylene pipes. The program has Peoples Gas replacing nearly 2,000 miles of natural gas pipes, more than 40 percent of the system. To learn more about the program, visit www.peoplesgasdelivery.com.
