Peoples Gas Says Fall into the Winter Preparation Mode Having Furnaces and Appliances Inspected Will Help Ensure Home Safety

Fall is officially here and with colder temperatures approaching, Peoples Gas is encouraging residents to get your heating system ready to warm your home safely and efficiently by following these tips:

  • Have your furnace/boiler inspected by a licensed, qualified technician.
  • Clean or replace your furnace filter as needed (follow manufacturer’s guidelines).
  • Check the flame in the burner to make sure it’s blue. A yellow flame may indicate the need for adjustment.
  • Check your chimney flues for corrosion and make sure all vents are clear of any blockages or debris.
  • Keep the area around your furnaces, boilers and water heaters clear. Do not store flammable liquids or other combustibles nearby.

Getting a tune-up on your furnace or boiler is an important first step in winter safety preparations. It can identify safety hazards and ensure your heating is working efficiently. Peoples Gas encourages customers to access a $50 rebate on furnace and boiler tune-ups through the Peoples Gas Home Energy Rebate Program.

Customers can save money and energy by replacing old furnaces with a high-efficiency model of 97% AFUE and qualify for a $600 rebate. Replacement boilers of 95% AFUE or greater qualify for a $700 rebate.

Please call the program office at (855) 849-8928 or visit www.peoplesgasrebates.com. As you purchase new heating equipment or have furnaces and other appliances inspected, Peoples Gas reminds customers to check the batteries in fire alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to ensure they are in working order. The presence of carbon monoxide alarms in the home can save your life.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas that can come from any inadequately burned and vented fuel sources, including water heaters, furnaces, ranges/stoves, clothes dryers, grills, fireplaces and portable generators. Residents are required by Illinois law to have working CO detectors in their homes and apartments. Taking the time to have heating equipment and other appliances inspected and ensuring CO alarms are in working order will help keep your family and friends safe.

Peoples Gas would also like to remind you that federal law requires regular inspection of natural gas meters and piping to natural gas meters located inside buildings. To avoid disruption to your natural gas service or any financial assistance with heating bills, please allow Peoples Gas to inspect your meter and piping to it when necessary.
