North Shore Gas Urges Customers to Apply for LIHEAP Assistance

General Enrollment Period Opens on November 1

Waukegan, IL – It may still be fall according to the calendar, but the unseasonable drop in temperatures for the past two weeks has furnaces clicking on all over town. As residents prepare for what could be a long winter season, North Shore Gas wants customers to know that the general enrollment application period for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) opens on November 1.

LIHEAP is a federally-funded program that provides grants to help customers pay outstanding energy bills, reconnect natural gas service and maintain their home's gas service. The November 1 application period is open to everyone who meets the criteria, including seniors (60+), people with disabilities and households where disconnection due to nonpayment has occurred. Customers are eligible to apply for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) grants if their income is 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines as follows:

Customers should bring the following documents with them if applying for a LIHEAP grant:

  • Proof of gross income from all household members for the last 30 days.
  • Copy of most recent utility bill.
  • Proof of Social Security Numbers of all household members.
  • A Medical Eligibility Card for any household member receiving TANF; and
  • Copy of rental agreement in cases where utilities are included in the rent.

LIHEAP is administered in Lake County by the Community Action Partnership of Lake County (CAP). North Shore Gas customers should call CAP at (847) 249-4330 for a list of application sites and guidelines.

To help customers prepare for winter, North Shore Gas is encouraging customers to save by taking advantage of the North Shore Gas Home Energy Rebate Program which is offering a $50 rebate on a furnace or boiler tune-up. To qualify for the rebate, the tune-up must be performed by a professional HVAC technician and cover all items listed on the checklist located at northshoregasrebates.com. The Home Energy Rebate Program also provides rebates for a wide range of other energy improvements to North Shore Gas customers who own single-family homes, two-flats or individually-metered condos, apartments or townhomes.

For instance, customers who replace their old furnace with a new high-efficiency model of 97% AFUE or greater qualify for a $600 rebate. And replacement boilers of 95% AFUE or greater qualify for a $700 rebate. The Home Energy Rebate Program also offers rebates on water heaters, programmable thermostats, duct sealing and pipe and attic insulation.
