Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez Supports Utility Assistance and Community Resource Fair

Chicago, IL – Chicagoans have faced a freezing start to 2014 with days of record-breaking sub-zero temperatures and the third largest January snowfall accumulation on record. With furnaces working overtime to help combat the coldest winter we’ve seen in 20 years, natural gas consumption in Chicago was up 28% in January 2014, compared to January, 2013.

On Saturday, February 22, Peoples Gas is partnering with U.S. Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez (4th District) in hosting a utility assistance and community resource fair to support those residents who are looking for help paying their energy bills.

The fair takes place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, at the Rauner Family YMCA, 2700 S. Western Avenue. Representatives from Peoples Gas, CEDA (Community Economic Development Association) and ComEd will be on site, along with a number of city, state and human services agencies, to provide information on programs and resources that are available to assist residents.

Congressman Gutierrez said, "It is important that residents have access to this timely and important financial assistance information during one of the coldest winters I can remember. I think this will be very helpful to my constituents and anyone struggling with the cost of staying warm."

During the fair, CEDA will accept applications from customers who are eligible to apply for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) and the Peoples Gas Share the Warmth fund.

LIHEAP is a federally-funded program that provides grants to help customers pay toward their outstanding energy bills, reconnect natural gas service and maintain their home's gas service. Share the Warmth is an energy assistance program funded through donations from Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, their employees and customers that provides matching grants of up to $200 to qualifying residents.

Peoples Gas is encouraging residents to apply for both programs to see if they meet the eligibility criteria before funds run out. Both programs are administered in Cook County by CEDA. Residents whose income is at or below 200% of the poverty level are eligible to apply for a Share the Warmth matching grant. LIHEAP is open to residents whose income is at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Level as shown on the following chart:

Family Income Guidelines
Household Size Maximum 30-Day Income
1 $1,436
2 $1,939
3 $2,441
4 $2,944
5 $3,446

Customers should bring the following documents with them if applying for a LIHEAP grant:

  • Proof of gross income from all household members for the last 30 days.
  • Copy of most recent utility bill.
  • Proof of Social Security Numbers of all household members.
  • A Medical Eligibility Card for any household member receiving TANF; and
  • Copy of rental agreement in cases where utilities are included in the rent.

Peoples Gas representatives will also provide information on how customers can save money and energy by taking advantage of the Peoples Gas Home Energy Rebate Program and the Home Energy Jumpstart Program, a partnership with ComEd. Peoples Gas customers who are unable to attend the utility assistance and resource fair can visit or or call CEDA's hotline at (800) 571-CEDA (2332) to find the location of the closest LIHEAP application site and for more information.
