Third Coldest Winter Increases Natural Gas Demand and Prices

Financial Assistance and Payment Options Available

Chicago, IL – The sustained colder-than-normal temperatures which broke several winter records, has meant consumers are using more natural gas to stay warm and comfortable. This increase in usage coupled with spikes in the cost of purchasing and transporting natural gas is expected to lead to higher than normal bills this spring.

The gas charge for April is expected to be about $1.19 per therm for Peoples Gas customers and about $1.21 per therm for North Shore Gas customers. The gas charge includes the actual purchase cost, transportation and storage of natural gas, which can vary month to month, but is passed through to customers with no markup.

Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas are encouraging customers to contact its customer service center to sign up for a budget bill option and spread the costs of this winter over the next 12 months. A variety of other payment plan options are available to suit individual customer circumstances and needs. Customers who would like assistance should contact Peoples Gas on 866-556-6001 or North Shore Gas on 866-556-6004.

The companies said they would continue the long history of working with community organizations to help low and fixed-income residents meet their energy needs. Peoples Gas works closely with Community Economic Development Association (CEDA) to deliver its Share the Warmth program, which provides matching grants to at-risk customers. In the North Shore Gas territory, the utility works with Community Action Partnership of Lake County to administer its program. The Share the Warmth program has provided more than $10.5 million in heating assistance grants to thousands of residents over the past 13 years.

Customers may also apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a state and federally funded program that assists low-income eligible households pay their winter heating bills. “Millions of dollars are still available in heating assistance funds to assist our qualifying customers," said Larry Szumski, vice president of Customer Relations. "We encourage customers to see if they qualify for a grant through their local community action agency.” Cook county residents should contact CEDA at 800-571-2332 and Lake County residents should contact Community Action Partnership of Lake County at 847-249-4330.

For Peoples Gas customers, a community resource fair for help with heating bills will be held on Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Chicago High School of Agricultural Sciences, 3857 W. 111th Street. Peoples Gas customer service representatives will assist customers with payment options and CEDA representatives will take applications from residents who qualify for LIHEAP funding and the Peoples Gas Share the Warmth matching grant program.

Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas also offer free products and services that help to educate customers about energy efficiency and conservation to better manage and lower their energy usage. Through April 30th, North Shore Gas is offering additional relief from this record breaking winter via double rebates on energy-saving equipment offered through its Home Energy Rebate Program. In addition to working overtime this winter, older appliances can use up to 16% more energy than new high efficiency models. Replacing a furnace or boiler with a new 97% efficient model can result in about $94 off an annual heating bill.
