Chicago Residents Need to Call DIGGER Before Summer Digging Projects

Chicago, IL - Peoples Gas reminds residents who are planning summer landscaping projects to call DIGGER on (312) 744-7000 or 8-1-1 before starting any project that requires digging. It's important for residents to follow safety procedures and call first to schedule a locate to make sure the area is clear of buried natural gas pipelines, as well as other electrical or telephone lines beneath the property. Projects could include anything from planting trees, shrubs or bushes, building a fence, deck or patio to the installation of underground sprinklers. Residents should be aware that natural gas pipelines can be within striking distance even for shallow digging projects. Even a temporary project like pounding stakes for graduation party tents requires a call to the DIGGER Hotline.

DIGGER is a 24-hour service network system established to prevent contractors and private citizens from hitting any existing utility lines when digging within the City of Chicago's limits. Location specialists will come to your home, locate, and mark all underground utility services in your yard free of charge.

Calling DIGGER on (312) 744-7000 or 8-1-1 well in advance to have locates completed, will help ensure you can start summer projects safely. A normal locate request requires 48 hours/two business days' notice (excluding weekends and holidays). Work must begin within 14 days from the time of the request and is good for 28 days.

Peoples Gas regularly inspects the meters and service pipes that provide natural gas to homes. When designing projects, residents should not build structures such as decks and garages over buried gas lines, mains or meters. Covering this equipment prevents Peoples Gas from performing important maintenance work that allows the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to your home.
