Peoples Gas Urges Customers to Attend Final Winter Utility Resource Fair

Gas charge increases after February Ties 140-year Record Cold

Chicago, IL - The average temperature last month in Chicago was only 14.6 degrees, which ties a 140-year record for the coldest February. The colder-than-normal temperatures could mean that natural gas bills may be higher than expected for some customers. Peoples Gas urges its customers to apply for financial assistance including LIHEAP and the Peoples Gas Share the Warmth program to help cover the heating costs of winter.

Peoples Gas, the Community Economic and Development Association (CEDA) and ComEd are hosting the last of four utility assistance and community resource fairs tomorrow to support those residents who are looking for help paying their energy bills. The fair will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at:

  • Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences
    3857 W. 111th St.
    10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Representatives from Peoples Gas, CEDA and ComEd will be on site, along with a number of city, state and human services agencies, to provide information on programs and resources that are available to assist residents. CEDA will take applications on site for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and the Peoples Gas Share the Warmth program.

In March, the gas charge for Peoples Gas customers will rise to $0.37 from $0.31 in February. The gas charge includes the actual purchase cost, transportation and storage of natural gas, which can vary month to month, but is passed through to customers with no markup.

"Millions of dollars are still available in heating assistance funds to assist our qualifying customers," said Larry Szumski, vice president of Customer Relations. "We encourage customers to see if they qualify for both grants at the utility resource fair or directly with CEDA."

Both Share the Warmth and LIHEAP provide financial assistance to limited and fixed-income households. Grants can be used to reconnect service, avoid disconnection and maintain a home's natural gas service. LIHEAP provides grants of varying amounts based on household need to help customers pay outstanding bills and reconnect service. Both programs are administered by CEDA (Community and Economic Development Association). Peoples Gas customers can call the CEDA hotline at (800) 571-CEDA (2332) or visit the website to find the location of the closest LIHEAP application site.

When applying for a LIHEAP grant, customers should bring the following documents:

  • Proof of gross income from all household members for the 30-day period prior to the application date
  • Copy of most recent utility bill
  • Proof of Social Security Numbers of all household members
  • If a household member receives TANF, you must bring their Medical Eligibility Card
  • Applicants that have their utilities included in the rent must bring proof of rental
  • Proof of gross income from all household members for the 30-day period prior to the application date
  • Copy of most recent utility bill

When applying for a Share the Warmth grant, customers only need:

  • Proof of gross income from all household members for the 30-day period prior to the application date
  • Copy of most recent utility bill

Customers can also visit the company website for a list of application sites and guidelines, as well as tips on conservation and energy efficiency, two great tools in helping to manage energy costs.

Peoples Gas would like to remind customers that federal law requires regular inspection of natural gas meters and service pipes located inside homes. To avoid any disruption to your natural gas service or financial assistance, please ensure you allow Peoples Gas to inspect your meter when necessary.
