Peoples Gas re-opens 2015 Share the Warmth financial assistance program

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)open for applications

CHICAGO, ILL. – Peoples Gas re-opened its Share the Warmth financial assistance program today with an additional $550,000 for customers. Share the Warmth provides annual matching grants to eligible fixed-income households for natural gas heating costs.

In addition, priority enrollment for Illinois’ Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) also opened today. Seniors (60+) and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply now for LIHEAP financial assistance for heating bills.

“We’ve been fortunate to have a warm fall so far, but Chicago’s cold winter weather soon will arrive," said Michelle Rindt, vice president - customer service, Peoples Gas. "Customers should act now and apply for financial assistance to help with heating bills.”

Grants from both programs can be used to reconnect service, avoid disconnection and maintain a home's natural gas service for customers who qualify.

“As winter approaches, our best advice to Chicago consumers is to be prepared,” CUB Executive Director David Kolata said. “If you think you qualify for financial assistance, don’t hesitate to call CEDA today to find out how to apply. Also, keep the lines of communication open with your utilities. Ask them about billing options available to you and great energy efficiency programs that help you cut your utility bills.”

LIHEAP and Share the Warmth are administered by the Community and Economic Development Association (CEDA). Peoples Gas customers should call the CEDA hotline (800) 571-CEDA (2332) to find the location of the closest application site.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Peoples Gas recently doubled the amount of Share the Warmth funds. Re-opening Share the Warmth with additional funding ensures at least 7,500 homes in Chicago will receive grants totaling more than $1.5 million this year.

To apply for a Share the Warmth matching grant, customers should bring:

  • Proof of household income or any financial assistance for the past 30 days for all members of the household over age 18;
  • Proof of Social Security numbers for all household members;
  • A Medical Eligibility Card for any member of your household receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); and
  • Your rental agreement, in cases where utilities are included in the rent.

LIHEAP will open more widely on November 1 for customers who require reconnection assistance and households with children under 6 years old. General enrollment for all other qualified customers will begin on December 1.

Peoples Gas offers bill payment and budget bill options to assist customers with managing their energy costs. Customers can reduce energy and water usage by requesting free Home Energy Jumpstart energy efficiency product installation.
