Customers reminded to clear meters, vents during heavy snowfall

With more snow forecast to fall in the southern portion of the state this evening, Minnesota Energy Resources reminds customers to clear snow and ice off their natural gas meters and heating vents.

A buildup of snow can place unnecessary stress on the meter's pipes, which could result in damage to the equipment and a subsequent natural gas leak. Clearing the meter also allows Minnesota Energy Resources employees to properly service it in an emergency, and keeps it visible along snow plow routes.

Customers also are advised to remove any snow and ice from furnace intake and exhaust vents. Blocked vents can cause a furnace to run improperly, or could lead to a potentially deadly buildup of carbon monoxide inside a home or building.

A broom should be used in place of a shovel to clear snow and ice, as a shovel could damage the meter or vents. Do not kick or hit a meter to break up built-up snow and ice. Customers also should use caution when shoveling, snow blowing or plowing near meters. Removing icicles from areas above meters will help prevent damage.

If you smell natural gas, leave the area immediately and call Minnesota Energy Resources' gas emergency line at 800-889-4970.
