Office of U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez and Peoples Gas host Winter Resource Fair to help Chicagoans with heating bills

Peoples Gas encourages customers to sign up for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and Share the Warmth before funds run out

CHICAGO – The office of U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (4th District) joined Peoples Gas and CEDA (Community Economic Development Association) today to host the 12th annual Winter Resource Fair at Instituto del Progreso Latino, 2520 S. Western Ave., on the city’s southwest side.

“Part of my job as a congressman for the 4th District is to help constituents link up with benefits and services for which they are eligible or entitled,” said Rep. Gutierrez. “We want to be a bridge between citizens and the federal and state governments and local resources to benefit the community. I am so pleased to partner with Peoples Gas for the Winter Resource Fair because we really want an informed community.”

Attendees received one-on-one consultations with Peoples Gas and 20 local vendors who provided information on energy and financial assistance, including CEDA and ComEd. Several city, state and human services agencies also were present to assist customers with other available resources.

“With winter in full force, we understand that times can be tough, and we want to remind customers that assistance with their heating bills is available,” said Michelle Rindt, vice president – customer service, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas. “Customers should apply for LIHEAP and Share the Warmth as soon as possible to help pay their natural gas bills before funds run out.”

Peoples Gas offered information and signed customers up for its energy efficiency rebates and programs, including Home Energy Jumpstart, which provides free, energy-saving products such as programmable thermostats, showerheads, faucet aerators, pipe insulation, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and smart power strips.

Through the federally funded LIHEAP program, customers receive help toward their energy bills. The Peoples Gas Share the Warmth program provides matching grants of up to $200 to qualifying customers for their natural gas bills.

Both LIHEAP and Share the Warmth are administered in Cook County by CEDA. LIHEAP is open to residents whose income is at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Residents whose income is at or below 200 percent of the poverty level are eligible to apply for a Share the Warmth matching grant as shown below:
