Applications being accepted for 9th annual Deer Hunt for Disabled Hunters

To help residents of all abilities enjoy one of the state’s signature traditions, the Wisconsin River Power Company (WRPCO) now is accepting applications for its 9th annual Deer Hunt for Disabled Hunters, Oct. 13 to 15 at the Petenwell Wildlife Area in Necedah.

The three-day event is the only time each year members of the public are given access to the Petenwell Wildlife Area. Interested residents are reminded to apply early, as the hunt is limited to a maximum of 10 hunters. Any hunter with a disability is encouraged to apply, but must have a state-issued hunting permit for persons with disabilities in order to participate.

WHAT: 9th annual Deer Hunt for Disabled Hunters

WHEN: Oct. 13 to 15, 2017

WHERE: Petenwell Wildlife Area, Necedah

WRPCO representatives will take part in the hunt as volunteers and can serve as partners for the hunters, assisting them with duties such as deer tracking, dragging and field dressing. WRPCO also will transport hunters to and from deer stands specifically designed to be accessible and functional for all participants.

WRPCO will provide a safety presentation to all hunters prior to the start of the hunt. The company will also provide five meals, including a dinner for hunters and guests on Friday, Oct. 13. Participants are responsible for their own lodging, hunting equipment, license, some meals (including dinner on Saturday, Oct. 14) and transportation to the Petenwell Wildlife Area.

Applications are being accepted until June 1. The hunters chosen to participate in this year's hunt will be notified by June 30. Interested hunters can apply online at wisconsinriverpower.com by clicking on "Deer Hunt for the Disabled" or by calling Jamie Nuthals at 920-433-1460.
