Peoples Gas Energy Efficiency Squad brings Earth Week surprises to customer homes

Utility teams up with community partners to encourage customers to make every day Earth Day with free home assessments and products

CHICAGO – Peoples Gas Energy Efficiency Squad celebrated Earth Day today by surprising four customers at their homes on Chicago’s South and Southeast sides with baskets of free energy-efficiency and sustainable goodies. Earth Day – a global day that recognizes the importance of environmental protection – is Saturday, April 22.

Arriving in the Peoples Gas command van, the seven-person Squad delivered the baskets to raise awareness about energy efficiency and encourage customers to save energy and money.

Peoples Gas teamed with three local organizations to select customers in need of an energy-saving boost: the Spanish Coalition for Housing (SCH), Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) 6th and 7th districts and Brighton Park Neighborhood Council (BPNC). The baskets included smart thermostats (ecobee3), $500 gift cards to be used on making the homes more energy-efficient, showerheads, faucet aerators, pipe insulation and eco-friendly products. Free home energy assessments and product installation also were included. In total, the baskets are valued at close to $900 each.

“Peoples Gas strives to make a difference in the communities where we operate,” said Michelle Rindt, vice president – customer service, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas. “We’re committed to being a good environmental steward and wanted to use Earth Day as an opportunity to remind customers to do the same.”

The Energy Efficiency Squad installed products in the customers’ homes, leaving them well prepared to start saving energy and money on their natural gas bills. Peoples Gas also shared additional information on its energy-efficiency programs, including Home Energy Jumpstart, and rebates for high-efficiency products.

“Our organization’s mission is to help Chicagoland-area families find resources,” said Melissa Ruvalcaba, SCH project coordinator. “We’re excited to partner with Peoples Gas for this opportunity to bring energy-efficient services to our customers who truly need to save, in addition to helping to promote a healthier environment and community.”

“We work with the community every day to provide resources that help the families we serve build safe environments,” said Beatriz Merlos, director of organizing for BPNC. “Today we were not only able to bring joy to program participants, but we are also able to raise awareness of the importance of saving our natural resources to help our communities thrive.”

Any qualifying customers can schedule a Home Energy Jumpstart, an offering that provides free products and home assessments. Customers can reduce their energy and water use with free installation of these products, available to owners of single-family homes, two-flats and individually metered condos and townhomes. Renters are also eligible with permission from their landlords.
