Michigan Gas Utilities offering grants to assist first responders in meeting safety needs

Local first responders, Michigan Gas Utilities representative available for interviews

Keeping local communities safe is a responsibility Michigan Gas Utilities takes seriously each day. To show support for those who also work to uphold public safety, Michigan Gas Utilities and its charitable giving organization, the Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) Foundation, are encouraging emergency response agencies in southern and western Michigan to apply for the "Safety-It's Worth the Energy" grant this spring. Grant applications are being accepted now through June 30.

Representatives from local emergency response agencies in the Michigan Gas Utilities service area are available for interviews with members of the media to discuss how receiving a grant in 2016 has helped improve public safety in the communities they serve. A Michigan Gas Utilities representative also will be available for interviews. Please contact Matt Cullen with Michigan Gas Utilities media relations for a list of the departments that are available for interviews.

Last year, Michigan Gas Utilities and the WPS Foundation awarded nearly $12,000 total to seven emergency response agencies through the grant, which helps organizations provide professional training or equipment for their staff.

In order to be eligible to receive the grant, emergency response agencies must operate within the Michigan Gas Utilities service area and demonstrate the equipment or training they wish to acquire is part of a well-detailed effort to improve public safety. Organizations may also apply for funding for upcoming projects, but they must be safety-focused efforts that are unique in nature.

Emergency response agencies interested in the "Safety-It's Worth the Energy" grant can apply online. More detailed information on the grant and the application guidelines can be found on the Michigan Gas Utilities website at www.michigangasut ilities.com/business/worth_energy_grant.aspx.
