Friday is 811 Day: Customers, excavators reminded to dig safely

Digging safely is a responsibility individuals and professionals across the country must take seriously. As part of 811 Day this Friday (Aug. 11), Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) reminds everyone to have underground utilities properly marked before beginning any project that involves digging or excavating.

WPS owns and operates more than 14,000 miles of underground electric and natural gas facilities throughout northeast and north central Wisconsin. In the past 19 months, there have been 448 incidents in which digging has damaged WPS underground utilities. On 56 occasions, a locate request was not made to have underground utilities marked, causing 474 customers to experience an electric or natural gas outage.

Digging safely includes:

  • Contacting Diggers Hotline, the statewide one-call system, at least three working days in advance. Requests can be filed online or by calling 811.
  • Utility crews marking the approximate location of underground equipment. WPS crews perform this work at no charge.
  • Hand digging within 18 inches on either side of underground equipment.
Aside from violating state law, failing to have buried utilities marked before digging could lead to an interruption in service, costly repairs or serious injury.
