WPS crews en route to assist with Hurricane Irma restoration efforts

More than 20 Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) employees from across the energy company's service area departed Ashwaubenon Wednesday morning to assist in restoring power following substantial outages caused by Hurricane Irma.

On Tuesday, additional crews and resources offered by WPS were requested to help utilities restore electricity to more than 7.8 million customers who have been affected by Hurricane Irma in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina. Last week, 75 contractors who typically perform work on behalf of WPS were released from their scheduled assignments to assist in restoring power in areas impacted by Irma.

We Energies, a utility subsidiary of WEC Energy Group along with WPS, also is providing internal crews and has released contract employees to help make repairs and restore power in the southeastern United States. In total, more than 220 WEC Energy Group employees and contractors have been requested to assist in restoring power.

WPS crews have been initially assigned to the Atlanta area to assist Georgia Power. The energy company is continuing to participate in mutual aid conference calls as utility and industry representatives assess damage and the resources needed to restore service to all customers impacted by Hurricane Irma.

WPS crews also assisted with power restoration efforts following Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and Hurricane Frances in 2004.
