WPS Foundation helping students improve STEM skills through Innovative Educator grants

To support local teachers and enhance student success, the Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) Foundation is offering its Innovative Educator Grant to educators teaching sixth- through 12th-grade students. Applications are open to teachers working at schools within the WPS service area, and will be accepted through Oct. 31.

Now in its 11th year, the Innovative Educator Grant helps teachers fund academic projects that aim to improve student achievement in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). In 2016, the WPS Foundation awarded nearly $25,000 to support educational initiatives such as robotics classes and programs, an automated honeybee pollination kiosk, an outdoor classroom space and agricultural projects.

"This opportunity has really made a difference in the successful instruction, application and long-term retention of content knowledge," said Tonya Young, a teacher at Green Bay West High School who received a 2016 grant to purchase muscle fiber models and microscope slides to reinforce learning about the human body.

Since the Innovative Educator Grant’s inception in 2007, the WPS Foundation has awarded more than $142,000 to fund 155 projects. These projects regularly include students from multiple classrooms, and in some cases benefit an entire school. Grant funds also may be used to purchase equipment or curriculum materials that will be integrated into a well-planned project or activity.

Teachers interested in the Innovative Educator Grant can submit an application online. More information and guidelines for the Innovative Educator Grant can be found at www.wisconsinpublicservice.com/innovativeeducator.
