Michigan Gas Utilities Seeks New Natural Gas Rates for 2010

Monroe, MI – Michigan Gas Utilities (MGU), a subsidiary of Integrys Energy Group, Inc. (NYSE: TEG), has filed a request for new natural gas rates with the Michigan Public Service Commission. The request, if approved, would result in overall rates about 4.5% higher in 2010 than in 2009. For the typical residential natural gas customer using 870 CCF of gas annually, the increase would be about $3.78/month.

"We know that even a small increase isn't welcomed news for our customers," said Paul Livernois, MGU spokesperson. "The good news is that the commodity price (Gas Cost Recovery on our customer bill), has fallen considerably since last heating season, so the typical gas bill should be less this winter, assuming we have normal winter temperatures."

The request is linked to several issues including:

Livernois said that the exact amount of any increase approved by the MPSC may not be known until next summer, but that an interim increase is slated for January 1, 2010.

"We know that rate increases in a tough economy are difficult for all of our customers. We are continually looking at ways to improve our efficiencies and reduce operating costs, just as any Michigan business,” Livernois added.

MGU customers will learn more about the proposed rates in information included with their August bills.
