Heating Season Is Wrapping Up
Monroe, MI - Officials at Michigan Gas Utilities (MGU), a subsidiary of Integrys Energy Group (NYSE:TEG), said that lower natural gas prices on the market translated to lower natural gas costs for this heating season as compared to a year ago.
"With April 1st considered the official end of the heating season, natural gas costs to our customers ran 26% lower than the 2008-09 heating season," said Paul Livernois External Affairs Manager. "We projected last October that we hoped to see a 20% reduction in heating costs this year and managed to exceed that expectation. This winter we didn't experience bitterly cold temperatures for extended periods, natural gas supply remained constant and prices stabilized nicely."
Livernois added that there were no disruptions to supply from the hurricane season as well. "We actually had a typical Michigan winter, comparing normal and actual heating degree days," Livernois added, noting that cooler temperatures always linger longer than most people would like this time of year.
Michigan Gas Utilities does not profit on the natural gas (commodity) costs; it passes that cost along to its customers.
Taking advantage of energy conservation opportunities can help reduce energy costs and MGU has plenty of tips available online at www.michigangasutilities.com or calling 800-401-6402. To investigate rebates on new natural gas appliances under the state of Michigan energy optimization program, customers are encouraged to visit www.efficiencyunited.com or call 877-367-3191.
And lastly, with warmer temperatures and outdoor projects around the corner, MGU urges contractors and homeowners to call 811 (800-482-7171) before they dig. The 811 hotline is a free service, which will notify utility companies of a person's intent to dig. After the call and the project is communicated, local utility companies will mark the approximate location of underground lines within a 3-day period to avoid any broken lines and potential danger to customers.
Michigan Gas Utilities serves approximately 167,000 customers throughout lower Michigan.
