WPS Rhinelander Service Center Receives LEED Gold Certification
Rhinelander, WI - Today, the newly-constructed Wisconsin Public Service Rhinelander Service Center received its official Gold Certification in Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED). The certification, second highest of LEED certifications, was presented to Barbara Nick, WPS Senior Vice President of Energy Delivery and Customer Service by Hoffman LLC.
"We're extremely pleased to accept this official LEED gold certification," said Nick. "It's a reflection of the WPS commitment to reducing our impact on the environment. Thanks are in order for all the contractors, vendors, and others who shared in the efforts to build this wonderfully environmentally-friendly facility."
Some of the environmentally-conscious design and construction aspects of the building include: An integrated design approach considering building shell, lighting, and mechanical systems, providing WPS with exceptional comfort and energy cost savings; a waste management plan is anticipated to recycle over 75% of all construction waste from the site, greatly reducing the amount of materials brought to landfills; and native vegetation on site, including prairie grasses, will help conserve water, reduce maintenance, and improve the surrounding environment.
LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies intended to improve performance in metrics such as energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.
Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED is intended to provide building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.
