CHICAGO, IL – As residents try to stay cool in the summer heat, , Peoples Gas and the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) have partnered to remind customers who are struggling financially that there is still help available through the Peoples Gas "Share the Warmth" program.
Share the Warmth is an energy assistance program that provides matching grants up to $200 to qualifying residents. Administered by CUB, the program is funded through donations from Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas utilities, their employees and customers and a grant from the City of Chicago. Since 2000, Share the Warmth has provided more than $10 million in heating assistance grants to more than 50,000 families.
"It's never too hot to think about your heating bills," CUB Executive Director David Kolata said. "The 'Share the Warmth' program can help qualifying families reduce their old debt right now, before another round of low temperatures and high natural gas bills set in."
This year, there is more than $585,000 available in the Share the Warmth fund to assist those in need. CUB and Peoples Gas strongly encourage residents whose income is at or below 200% of the poverty level to apply. Customers, who have already received LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) grants, may also be eligible to receive a Share the Warmth grant.
Customers can apply for a Share the Warmth grant at any of the Energy Action Network (EAN) sites. Visit http://www.citizensutilityboard.org or Peoples Gas Share the Warmth for a complete list of the sites.
In addition to Share the Warmth, Peoples Gas and CUB say residents can lower their energy bills by managing their energy consumption even during the dog days of summer. A few money-saving tips include:
"We want our customers to think of conserving energy as a year-round process," said Patrick Michalkiewicz, manager, Energy Efficiency and Major Accounts for Peoples Gas. "Residents can manage their costs by conserving energy in their everyday lives and there's no better time than now to take advantage of the sizzling rebates being offered through our Residential Prescriptive Rebate Program."
Owners of single-family homes and smaller multi-family buildings are eligible for rebates when they install certain types of energy-saving products. The current program runs through May 31, 2013 and includes rebate offers up to $750 for complete system replacements (furnace and central air conditioner); $600 for boilers; $500 for furnaces and 30 cents per square foot for attic insulation.
